New book available now

Parallel to my current projects in the perfume and cosmetics industry, I also publish credentials of my academic work. Very recently, the book on “Brands and Branding Geographies”, edited by Prof. Dr. Andy Pike (Newcastle University) and published by Edward Elgar, came out. In Chapter 8 on “Sensing brands, branding scents: on perfume creation in the fragrance industry”, I analyze and characterize creative practices of knowing in the international fragrance industry in their specific geographies. Be real! Value creation through authenticity

Recently, I discussed in the article about slow perfume (which was also recognized elsewhere) the idea that perfume creations can – in consideration of their timely constitution and long-term continuity – be thought of as valuable individual goods instead of accelerated mass products. This idea is based on several components.

One basic component is the facet of authenticity. Authenticity is extremely relevant in the case of multiple other products and groups of products that demand well-trained capacities in explaining and presenting those goods. Read more

Die von mir kürzlich als „slow perfume“ dargestellte und anderswo aufgegriffene Überlegung, Parfumkreationen vor dem Hintergrund der zeitlichen Konstitution und langfristigen Kontinuität nicht als beschleunigtes Massengut zu verstehen, sondern als wertiges Individualgut, basiert auf verschiedenen Basiskomponenten.

Eine elementare Komponente ist dabei die Facette der Authentizität, die im Übrigen auch bei vielen anderen exklärungs- und präsentationsintensiven Produkten und Produktgruppen eine wichtige Rolle spielt. Authentizität ist ein vielschichtig diskutierter Begriff. Authentizität ist zugleich Input, Output und Antriebsstoff im sozialen Gefüge zwischen Produktion, Distribution und Konsumption. Read more

The fragrance industry: Sensing brands, branding scents

The date is getting closer: The edited volume on “Brands and Branding Geographies” (Edward Elgar, 2011) by the British economic geographer Andy Pike (University of Newcastle) will be published in August. The edition deals with the issues of brands, branding and brand development. So far, economic geographers have hardly covered this theme that is of utmost relevance in several industries and for current economic affairs. Read more
