In this sympathetic critique, the author appreciates „the theoretical discussion of knowledge in the context of branding geographies – a fresh theme in this field of study” (p. 451). I claimed that the “relevance and role of brands is missing from the knowledge debate in economic geography (p. 146) and tried to inspire an emphasis on this relevant mediator. I am curious about the further developments in this regard. Moreover, the book will shortly be available as a paperback version.

Currently, I am coordinating my efforts to get involved in activities beyond the regular consulting routines within the perfume and cosmetics industry. In 2013, one of my initiatives is to organize and chair a session at the Fourth International and Interdisciplinary Conference on Emotional Geographies which is taking place from July 1-3, 2013 at the University of Groningen, The Netherlands. As the conference website claims, the “conference provides a forum for a range of people from different disciplinary backgrounds as well as societal partners and artists to creatively explore the role of emotion in thinking about and experiencing space and society.”

I am organizing a session that is titled Scentual worlds: on emotional geographies of olfaction (Session 36). I invite participants/presenters – both scholars as well as practitioners – to present their work. In their presentations, the focus should be on the relevance of olfaction in society and space. In particular, the relevance of emotions and instinctual relations to scents and smells are highlighted. In the Call for Papers, I claim: “Smells connect directly with the limbic system and evoke immediate sensual relations. This aspect describes the human sense of smell as instinctual, emotional, perceptual, experiential, associational, and affective.” The Call for Papers is open until January 11, 2013.

Thus, if you are interested to learn more about this idea and initiative do not hesitate to get in touch with me.
